Winemaking and viticulture date back to the early 1830's in New Zealand, when James Busby was producing wines on his property in Waitangi.
The wine industry began in earnest at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century when Dalmation immigrants settled around Auckland in the North island.
Today the Marlborough region is one of the most well known areas of the world for Sauvignon Blanc. The first mention of Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough occurs 1977, when Montana had some early success with the varietal, but it was during the 1980's that the critics put Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc firmly on the winemaking map.
