In the 1960's, you could buy flagon-shaped bottles labelled, to the chagrin of the French "Australian Burgundy". An rough old stuff it was too. However, in recent decades Australian wine has improved beyond all recognition. Australia is now a world leader in terms of both quantity and quality.
